Alastair Gavin

I am a keyboardist, musical director, composer and arranger and have run music workshops at Folk Camps since 2005.

In 2021, with multi-instrumentalist folk musician Chris Jewell I compiled, arranged and published The Unexpected Polka, a book of over 100 folk dance tunes for musicians of all levels. Every tune in this book has a newly written mostly easier second (and sometimes third) part, to encourage all musicians to join in. This book will be the basis for my workshops on camp and is available to buy on our website www.theunexpectedpolka.com. Also on the website are many play-along audio and video clips of tunes in the book.

I love a large music workshop which stays together for the whole morning and our book is designed exactly for this!

Other stuff about me: I am a lead lecturer on the Popular Music Performance BMus at BIMM Institute London, and have worked with pop, jazz and contemporary classical artists ranging from Paul McCartney to Michael Nyman, and on various shows in London’s West End. I was keyboards presenter on BBC 2’s Rockschool II and am currently composing electronic music for TV, film and live performance, with two albums recently released on Warner Chappell: Weathered Stone and From A Distant Earth.

With my wife, poet Cheryl Moskowitz, I run All Saints Sessions, a poetry and electronics live performance series allsaintssessions.uk

Looking forward hugely to seeing you on camp!
