I’ve been going to Folk Camps for as long as I can remember. I think I was about 6 when it all began! It was always my favourite time of year and my preferred family holiday – my mum was always in the kitchen catering and I was left to run around with all the kids, we only ever saw each other at meal times, it was great!
I love being in the kitchen, it’s all I’ve ever really known at Folk Camp, I’ve worked my way up, from being the one nominated to go and negotiate with the cooks of the day for more chocolate spread, to being the cake maker for the week to now being full-on caterer!
I love travelling around the UK to stay in various fields that I would never otherwise see, and the evenings never fail to make me laugh. Every week is a unique experience with good beer, good food and great friends.
There are so many memories I have of Folk Camp, one that particularly sticks in my mind is being a young and innocent 10 year old, walking in on Simon Reynolds at the start of the toss off. (Pancake tossing obviously, what were YOU thinking)!
I’ve grown up going to camps being in the kitchen, I don’t know any better! Now that I have been lucky enough to be asked to join the staffing team, you’ll often find me running around having a blast, helping (at least that is what I am aiming to do!) the wonderful volunteer cooks of the day produce the excellent food Folk Camp guests have now become accustomed to after the generations of caterers that have gone before me.
Whilst during the rest of the year I’m not a particularly folky person, I love the evening singalongs and all the dancing that takes place at Folk Camp. I have also recently started dancing with a Morris team – watch this space!
